Claude Monet: A Century of Admiration

Paris – June 27, 2026: 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Claude Monet. The painter, who died in Giverny on December 5, 1926, left behind more than 2,000 works. These include masterpieces such as “Impression, Sunrise” and “Water Lilies.” They are closely linked to the landscapes of Normandy and Île-de-France, where Monet found inspiration for his work.

To mark this anniversary year, the regions of Normandy and Île-de-France have prepared an extensive program featuring more than 100 events. The aim is to celebrate Monet’s artistic legacy and highlight the places that follow in his footsteps.

In Giverny, Monet’s longtime home, the Musée des Impressionnismes will present the exhibition “Before the Water Lilies. Monet Discovers Giverny 1883–1890” from March 27 to July 5, 2026. The exhibition focuses on his early years in the village and presents works reflecting impressions of nature.

Paris’s Musée d’Orsay will host the exhibition “Monet, Painting Time” from September 30, 2026, to January 25, 2027. It examines the relationship between Monet’s work and time, showing how the painter captured fleeting moments in his paintings.

At the André Malraux Museum of Modern Art (MuMa) in Le Havre, the exhibition “Monet in Le Havre” will run from June 5 to September 27, 2026. It looks back at his early years (1845–1874) and explores how the Normandy coastal city shaped the painter’s perspective and influenced the development of Impressionism.

Numerous events will also take place in the Yvelines department, which Monet painted frequently. The region offers opportunities to explore the landscapes that inspired him and to take part in guided tours, creative workshops, and themed hikes, allowing visitors to follow in Monet’s footsteps.

These diverse initiatives offer an opportunity to rediscover the connection between Claude Monet’s work and the French landscape in this special year. The commemorative program highlights not only his outstanding artistic achievements but also Monet’s importance in contemporary art and regional tourism.

Through a wide range of exhibitions and events, not only is the individual artist’s work celebrated, but the continuing influence of the Impressionist movement on the art world and France’s cultural heritage is also emphasized.
