Nice – 17.06.2026: The political dispute between Éric Ciotti, the mayor of Nice, and Philippe Tabarot, the Minister of Transport, has reached a new level of escalation. Ciotti publicly demands the resignation of his former party colleague Tabarot, after the latter allegedly massively insulted and threatened him at the “Bharat Innovates” salon on June 14. According to eyewitnesses, Tabarot called Ciotti a “Nabot” – a derogatory term – and threatened him with the words: “I will make you disappear by sending Georgians to you.” The meaning of this threat is not clearly understood, as Tabarot was previously president of the parliamentary friendship group France-Georgia, leading to speculation about a possible subtextual reference.
Ciotti immediately responded to the public attack by reporting the incident to the Nice public prosecutor’s office. In a formal letter, he also addressed Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu directly and demanded the immediate dismissal of Tabarot. He condemned the statements as “public insult and threat” and made it clear that “mafia-like threats have no place in a democratic state.”
The Minister of Transport himself rejects the accusations. He, in turn, accuses Ciotti of having threatened him previously, which further intensifies the tensions between the two politicians. The public prosecutor’s office has taken up the case and is currently examining whether to initiate criminal proceedings.
The conflict has not only shaken the political scene in Nice but also attracted nationwide attention. Both politicians were formerly members of the same party, but their enmity is becoming increasingly public and personal. Observers also see possible effects on the upcoming Senate elections in September 2026, as Ciotti and Tabarot are each key figures in their political environment.
Analysts assume that the further development of the conflict could influence intra-party dynamics in France. Ciotti is regarded as a charismatic representative of his region with a large following, while Tabarot, as an experienced minister, plays a central role in the government. The demand for his resignation therefore also represents a challenge for Prime Minister Lecornu, who now has to take a position.
The public is following the events with great interest, especially since the incident raises questions about conduct and threats of violence in French politics. The debate highlights an increasingly tense atmosphere in everyday political business, where personal conflicts are more and more often played out openly. The coming days will be crucial for the further development of the situation between Ciotti, Tabarot, and the government.
