Deadly Apartment Fire in Antwerp-Linkeroever: Five Victims, Numerous Injured

Antwerp – 01.07.2026: In the Belgian port city of Antwerp, a fire broke out on Wednesday morning in a high-rise residential building in the Linkeroever district. According to police and fire services, at least five people died. Numerous other residents required medical treatment, many for smoke inhalation. Emergency personnel evacuated the building and set up a contact point for those affected.

According to authorities, the emergency call came in at around 9:53 a.m. The fire reportedly started in an apartment on the upper floors, initially reported to be on the eighth floor. Thick, black smoke spread rapidly across several floors and was visible from afar. Firefighters from several stations were on site and fought the flames under difficult conditions in the ten-story building. Residents in the area were asked through official channels to keep windows and doors closed.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes in the stairwells. A survivor reported warning neighbors as they made their way outside; for some, escape was barely possible due to the heavy smoke. The identities of the victims and the injured were not initially released. The incident command activated a medical emergency plan to coordinate nearby hospitals. Injured people were distributed among several hospitals; confirmed figures on the number of seriously injured were not available by evening.

Police and firefighters immediately launched investigations into the cause of the fire. There were initially no concrete indications whether a technical defect, human error, or another cause triggered the blaze. Fire investigators secured evidence on the affected floors while structural engineers checked the building’s safety. The city organized temporary accommodation and psychosocial support for evacuees. Housing and insurance issues are to be clarified with the relevant authorities in the coming days.

The affected high-rise is located in the Linkeroever district on the left bank of the Scheldt, an area with larger residential blocks from various construction periods. Major fires in multi-storey buildings regularly spark debates in Belgium and other EU countries about mandatory smoke detectors, evacuation plans, and fire safety standards in existing buildings. In Antwerp, too, emergency services have for years urged people to keep escape routes clear, to keep doors closed in the event of a fire, and, in case of heavy smoke, to move to areas with less smoke until help arrives. Authorities provide official safety advice online and through local information channels.
