Death of Mesnoyam: Investigation into Possible Homophobic Motive Still Ongoing

Metz – June 9, 2026: 19-year-old Noam M., from Talange, died at Metz Hospital on June 2. Prior to this, he was involved in a heated dispute at Republic Square during the night of May 29 to 30, 2026. Two men, a 27-year-old uncle and his 20-year-old nephew, were arrested on June 1 and charged with attempted murder and injury causing death. A third 19-year-old suspect was released after questioning.

The investigation partly focuses on a possible homophobic motive. Metz prosecutor David Thuet stated that there is currently a lack of concrete evidence. At the same time, several witnesses reported that Noam was repeatedly subjected to homophobic insults including “pedo lover” and “sissy.” The victim appeared to be targeted due to his effeminate appearance and his presumed sexual orientation.

On the night of the attack, Noam encountered another group of young people listening to music with his friends. After a brief verbal exchange, the situation quickly escalated into a physical altercation. Noam was struck multiple times in the head. His 21-year-old cousin tried to intervene and also sustained facial injuries. Noam was taken to the hospital and died from his injuries four days later.

The investigation is ongoing, and future findings may lead to adjustments in the charges. The two main suspects had no prior criminal record and face possible life imprisonment, depending on the court proceedings.

On June 2, about 250 people gathered in Metz to hold a memorial for Noam. The organizations Couleurs Gaies and Stop Homophobie initiated this protest, aiming to oppose violence and discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community.

The organization SOS Homophobie strongly condemned this incident, calling it “double violence,” emphasizing that such behavior cannot be tolerated today. The organization calls on officials to recognize homophobic motives officially to bring justice to the victims and prevent LGBTI-phobia victims from being forced into silence.

In an open letter to the President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet, the parliamentary group La France insoumise requested a moment of silence for Noam. The deputies emphasized that the Republic cannot ignore Noam’s death and reiterated that homophobia remains a deadly threat in France.

The authorities continue their investigation to thoroughly clarify the specific circumstances and motives of the attack, ensuring that all relevant factors are carefully examined to guarantee justice for Noam.
