A summer day in May — and suddenly it ends in a tragedy. In Tourville-la-Rivière near Rouen, a 38-year-old man drowned in Lac de Bédanne on Wednesday. The lake has been known for years as a popular meeting place for people seeking relief from high temperatures. But swimming is actually prohibited there.
According to first findings, the man was in an unsupervised section of the recreational area. Shortly thereafter, he disappeared under the water. Rescue services were quickly on site after the emergency call, but all help came too late. The man could no longer be resuscitated.
The accident happened during an unusually early heatwave in France. For days, temperatures have been well above normal values for late May. Parks, riverbanks and lakes fill up in many places with people looking to escape the stifling heat. Especially unmanaged waters quickly attract a lot of attention — although they often pose significant risks.
And that is exactly the problem.
Many of these lakes seem harmless. The water surface glistens peacefully in the sun, families sit on the shore, young people jump laughing into the water. But beneath the surface lie dangers that can surprise even experienced swimmers. Old gravel pits or artificially created lakes often have steep banks, suddenly deep areas or icy cold water layers a few meters below the surface. Those who go swimming there quickly underestimate the forces of nature.
The authorities have therefore been warning for years about so-called wild swimming spots. Especially on hot days, the number of accidents noticeably increases. Sometimes a circulation problem or cold shock is enough — and within seconds, a life-threatening situation arises from a short jump into the water. “It happens faster than you think,” rescue services repeatedly say. It sounds trivial, but it is a bitter reality.
The Lac de Bédanne is now well known in the region. Dangerous situations regularly occur there. Despite prohibition signs, the water attracts many visitors on warm days. Many apparently underestimate the danger or simply hope that nothing will happen. Unfortunately, this combination often ends fatally.
The investigation into the exact circumstances of the accident is still ongoing. For the family of the man, this matters little. For them, a hot May day remains that suddenly changed everything.
