Perpignan – 11 July 2026: Three new forest and vegetation fires broke out on 9 July in the Perpignan metropolitan area (Pyrénées-Orientales department). One of the fire fronts spread to the outer areas of the regional airport, leading to a temporary suspension of flight operations. The prefecture and SDIS 66 reported a rapid and extensive deployment of ground and air crews. According to initial official information, one of the fires affected around ten hectares of vegetation and threatened adjacent areas.
The incident command ordered road closures in the surrounding area to keep access routes clear for firefighters and emergency services. Airport operations were suspended as a precaution until smoke and the proximity of the flames no longer posed a risk to take-offs and landings. Through official channels, the prefecture continuously provided information on diversions, closures and the gradual resumption of traffic.
Two further fire fronts were confirmed in the area around the Aspres hills, a region that had already faced a high fire risk in recent days. According to authorities, persistent heat, drought and strong Tramontane winds contributed to the rapid spread. Firefighters deployed water tankers, bulldozers to create firebreaks and air support to contain the flames along critical lines. Fire protection work focused on areas bordering residential and commercial zones.
Particularly vulnerable facilities close to the fire sites were included in the response planning. A travellers’ camp and the animal shelter of the Société Protectrice des Animaux (SPA) were temporarily within the danger zone. Targeted evacuations and protective measures were prepared; animals and staff could be moved to safe areas if necessary. Authorities asked residents to keep windows closed, leave access routes clear and strictly follow the instructions of emergency crews.
The prefecture also activated the Cellule d’information du public (CIP) to consolidate information on hazardous situations and advise affected people. At the same time, authorities banned activities carrying a high fire risk, such as open flames, outdoor spark-producing work or driving through particularly dry scrubland. For the further course of the situation, they warned of shifting wind patterns that could reactivate smouldering hotspots. Updated assessments were to be provided during the day by the prefecture and SDIS 66.
The Pyrénées-Orientales region has experienced a tense fire season since the start of summer. Repeated alert levels, low soil moisture and Mistral and Tramontane episodes have worsened conditions. Municipalities are preparing preventive vegetation trimming and clearance work; property owners are being reminded of their clearance obligations. Travellers are asked to use paved parking areas and not leave cigarette butts or glass in the countryside.
