Amid the exceptional heatwave in France, a tragic family tragedy occurred in the Val-d’Oise department. A three-year-old boy was found lifeless on Wednesday in his parents’ car in Saint-Gratien. Despite the rapid response of emergency services and intensive resuscitation efforts, the child could not be saved.
According to initial findings by investigators, the father spent the afternoon working in a garden shed. The mother was resting with the 18-month-old sibling. The three-year-old was also supposed to take his nap. However, he apparently left the house unnoticed and reached the family car parked in front of the house. According to information so far, the car doors were not locked.
Inside the vehicle, the boy reportedly locked himself in, unable to leave the car under his own power. It was approximately 45 minutes later when the parents noticed his disappearance. When they found him, they immediately attempted to revive him with chest compressions. Shortly afterward, the alerted rescue workers arrived and took over the resuscitation efforts. Nevertheless, all help came too late. The child’s death was confirmed in the early evening.
The body was taken for forensic examination. An autopsy is intended to determine the exact cause of death and whether the extreme heat alone caused the child’s death. The public prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation into negligent homicide. The police are now reconstructing the exact sequence of the accident and examining all circumstances.
The incident occurred during one of the most intense heatwaves in recent years in France. Especially in closed vehicles, temperatures can rise drastically within a very short time. Life-threatening conditions prevail there after just a few minutes – even if the car is parked in the shade or outside temperatures appear relatively moderate. Young children are among the highest risk groups, as their bodies can compensate for overheating far less effectively than adults.
The tragedy also recalls another tragic incident a few days earlier in which two small children likewise died in a car. Health authorities therefore urgently appeal to parents and relatives to exercise particular caution during the ongoing heatwave. Even a brief moment of unattended time in extreme temperatures can have devastating consequences.
