France – 05.08.2026: The persistent lack of rain is delaying the flax harvest and putting pressure on farms in northern France. At the same time, very little precipitation fell in many places; by the end of the month, near-surface soils across the country were severely dried out. The state regional agriculture directorate in Hauts-de-France had already considered crops there to be at risk from drought in June.
According to the national hydrological status report for July, France’s rainfall deficit in June 2026 stood at around 45 percent. More than half of the monitored groundwater levels were below the seasonal norm. The data do not concern flax alone, but they explain the lack of water in many agricultural areas and the pressure on crops that depend on natural rainfall.
For flax farms, the focus now is on the timing and distribution of upcoming rainfall. Too little moisture extends the waiting period; uneven conditions can affect fiber quality. A delay in field retting can also affect downstream stages such as turning the swaths, collecting the crop and industrial processing.
France is among Europe’s leading producers of fiber flax. Developments in the growing regions are therefore also relevant to spinning mills and textile companies. The recent drought is exacerbating a risk already evident in official climate and water assessments: heat, low rainfall and dry soils are hitting agricultural supply chains during a particularly sensitive phase of the harvest.
