Drought Halts Navigation on the Burgundy Canal and the Canal Lateral a la Loire

Dijon – 04 August 2026: The persistent drought has brought navigation on two major waterways in central France to a halt. The Burgundy Canal and the Canal Lateral a la Loire are closed to traffic. This is according to a status update from the state waterway authority Voies navigables de France (VNF), most recently updated on 31 July. The authority cites several consecutive heatwaves and increasing pressure on available water reserves as the cause.

According to VNF, water volumes are no longer sufficient to maintain the operation of locks and canal reaches under safe conditions. Canals depend on a regular supply: with every lock operation, water flows from a higher section into the next one. If the necessary replenishment from rivers, reservoirs and tributaries is lacking, water levels fall along the route. The authority therefore continuously monitors its network and adjusts operations to the reserves available locally.

The Burgundy Canal had already been operating under special conditions during the 2026 season. Restricted navigation hours had been in force since April on the central section between Venarey-les-Laumes and Pouilly-en-Auxois, and advance registration was also required. VNF had warned early on that, in the area of the Panthier reservoir, navigability in the event of water shortages depends on weather conditions and outflows. The full closure now significantly intensifies these restrictions.

River tourism, for which the Burgundy Canal is an important link, is particularly affected. Charter companies, private boat owners and operators of tourist cruises must change routes, postpone trips or cancel them. The Canal Lateral a la Loire, which runs parallel to the Loire over long stretches, is also no longer available as a route for leisure and excursion boats. Businesses along the waterways may consequently lose visitor revenue during the peak summer season.

Restrictions on water use had already been imposed or tightened in the departments along the affected canals. In June, the Yonne prefecture ordered further limits for several catchment areas. At the end of July, the state administration in Saone-et-Loire also called for a reduction in water withdrawals by private and commercial users. The measures are intended to safeguard scarce reserves for priority uses and the protection of waterways.

VNF intends to update its navigability information regularly over the remainder of the summer. The authority has not yet announced a date for the resumption of navigation. Sufficient water levels and inflows would be required for locks and canal sections to be operated safely again.
