One Year of Transdev on the Marseille-Nice TER Line: Denser Timetable and Better Punctuality Convince Many Commuters

Marseille – 30.06.2026: One year after Transdev took over the regional connection Marseille-Nice, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region reports a predominantly positive interim assessment. The change of operator was the first project of its kind in France and was closely followed across Europe. From passengers’ perspective, the more frequent connections and a more stable operation stand out, while politicians regard the move as proof of greater competitiveness in public transport.

The core of the new service structure is a significant expansion of the timetable compared with the previous service. Transdev is deploying double-deck trains of the Alstom Omneo type, which offer more seats, large luggage areas and spaces for bicycles. Visible service staff and longer operating hours are intended to further increase stability. In media reports many commuters express satisfaction: shorter waiting times, regular intervals and a calmer operation reportedly shape daily life. Cleanliness and the interior are also mentioned as plus points.

The introduction did not proceed without friction. In the first months there were isolated disruptions and adjustments to operations. According to the operator, maintenance processes were ramped up, staff were increased and procedures adjusted to secure fleet availability. Observers see systematic maintenance as the key to sustainable punctuality; they also note that only a multi-year comparison will demonstrate robustness.

Politically, the region’s decision marks a break with the previous monopoly structure. The tender opened the market to a second provider alongside the SNCF and was linked to the aim of noticeably improving service quality and frequency. The project received national attention because it rekindled the debate about efficiency, cost control and customer benefit in regional transport. In the region the approach is so far being recorded as a success, not least because demand has increased according to those responsible.

At the same time, open questions remain. Experts warn that the effects on fare policy, the working conditions of train staff and long-term price developments can only be assessed with reliable data over several years. The interface between operator and infrastructure also remains decisive: bottlenecks on the heavily used Mediterranean corridor can only be mitigated through close cooperation with the network operator. For travelers – whether commuters between metropolitan areas or leisure users on the coast – the overall impression after the first year is nevertheless of a more reliable service with more modern vehicles and a denser timetable.

The region and the operator interpret the positive response as confirmation of their model. Independent voices call for punctuality, capacity and price developments to be documented continuously and transparently in order to properly assess the impact of competition on regional transport.
