US Vice President J.D. Vance travels to Switzerland for talks with Iran

Zurich – 21.06.2026: U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance arrived in Zurich on Sunday morning to begin formal negotiations with Iranian representatives on Iran’s nuclear program. The aim of these talks is to ease the conflict in the Middle East, which has lasted for more than a year, and to consolidate a fragile ceasefire that can serve as the basis for a lasting solution. The negotiations are scheduled to last 60 days, during which a comprehensive peace agreement will be sought. Vance was accompanied by his wife Usha Vance and landed at around 6 a.m. at Emmen Air Base near Lucerne.

In addition to Vance, the U.S. delegation is led by special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. On the Iranian side, participants in the talks include Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The negotiations are being held at the Bürgenstock Resort in the Swiss Alps, which, with its luxurious atmosphere and views of Lake Lucerne, provides a neutral and representative setting.

This meeting represents the first direct talks between the United States and Iran since the summit in Islamabad in April 2026. The main hope is that Iran will once again allow UN inspectors access to its nuclear facilities. These facilities had previously been the target of airstrikes by the United States and Israel, which intensified the conflict. The last inspection conducted by the United Nations dates back to the outbreak of war in June 2025.

Despite the willingness to negotiate, the regional situation remains tense. Israel and Hezbollah announced renewed adherence to the ceasefire on Saturday, a step that is nevertheless viewed cautiously due to previous rapid breakdowns of such agreements. In addition, Iran temporarily closed the strategic Gulf of Oman, further increasing tensions between the parties to the conflict. U.S. President Donald Trump then threatened to impose tolls on naval transit through the strait if a final peace agreement was not reached within 60 days.

The international community is following the negotiations closely, as their outcome could have far-reaching consequences for regional and global security. Vance and his counterparts emphasize the importance of constructive dialogue and a sustainable agreement that ends the prolonged conflict.

The coming weeks will show whether the talks lead to lasting peace or whether the conflict flares up again. Switzerland, as host, offers a suitable environment for these negotiations of major historical significance, thanks to its neutrality and experience in mediating international conflicts.
