Emmanuel Macron Honors Edgar Morin with National Tribute at the Invalides

Paris – 06/03/2026: On the morning of Wednesday, June 3, 2026, numerous public figures gathered in the Cour du Dôme at the Invalides to pay their final respects to the recently deceased philosopher and sociologist Edgar Morin. The national memorial ceremony, led by President Emmanuel Macron, began at 11:00 a.m. Due to renovation work in the historically significant building, the ceremony was held not in the usual Cour d’Honneur but in the neighboring Cour du Dôme.

Edgar Morin, who passed away on May 29, 2026, at the age of 104, was an outstanding figure in the French intellectual scene. His diverse roles as a resistance fighter during World War II, committed socialist, writer, and influential thinker significantly shaped the intellectual landscape of France. Morin is particularly known for his interdisciplinary work, including the six-volume series “La Méthode,” which influenced generations of researchers across various scientific disciplines.

In his speech, President Macron honored Morin as a “soldier of the Resistance, dedicated activist, writer and thinker of the century, defender of nature and peoples.” Macron emphasized that Morin embodied humanism and demonstrated an “extraordinary life path in the century.” These words reflected Morin’s commitment to freedom, social critique, and ecological responsibility.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and other government members. In addition to politicians, prominent figures from cultural and scientific fields were present to recognize Morin’s contribution to French society. The location was adorned with floral arrangements, and the coffin was carried by military personnel as the national anthem played.

Morin leaves behind a comprehensive intellectual legacy addressing the complex interrelations of the modern world. His ability to connect various fields of knowledge made him a key figure in both French and international intellectual circles. His works continue to serve as a foundation for discussions on society, democracy, ecology, and humanity.

The national memorial ceremony at the Invalides underscored the high esteem in which Morin was held in France and beyond. It offered attendees the opportunity to reflect on his legacy and its significance for today’s society.

The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence and the solemn departure of the coffin, accompanied by military honors and the sound of the national anthem. Those present left the Cour du Dôme in silent remembrance of one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century.

With the death of Edgar Morin, an era of French intellectual history comes to an end. Nevertheless, his influence remains alive, as his ideas and writings will continue to inspire future generations of thinkers and researchers.
