Emmanuel Macron pays national tribute to Edgar Morin at the Invalides

Paris – June 3, 2026: On the morning of Wednesday, June 3, 2026, many public figures gathered at the Cour du Dôme in Les Invalides to pay their final respects to the recently deceased philosopher and sociologist Edgar Morin. The national memorial ceremony, presided over by President Emmanuel Macron, began at 11 a.m. Due to renovation work on the historic building, the event was held in the adjacent Cour du Dôme rather than the traditional Cour d’Honneur.

Edgar Morin, who passed away on May 29, 2026, at the age of 104, was an outstanding figure of French intellectual life. His various roles during World War II as a resistance fighter, passionate socialist, writer, and influential thinker decisively shaped the intellectual landscape of France. He is particularly well known for his six-volume interdisciplinary work “La Méthode,” which has influenced generations of researchers across various academic fields.

In his speech, President Macron honored Morin as a “soldier of the Resistance, passionate activist, author and thinker of the century, and guardian of nature and nations.” Macron emphasized that Morin embodied humanism and demonstrated a “remarkable life journey through the century.” These words reflect Morin’s dedication to freedom, social critique, and ecological responsibility.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and other government officials, as well as prominent figures from politics, culture, and science, who all paid tribute to Morin’s contributions to French society. The venue was decorated with floral arrangements, the coffin was carried by soldiers, and the national anthem resounded.

Morin left behind a vast intellectual legacy addressing the complex interrelations of the modern world. His ability to connect diverse fields of knowledge made him a central figure not only in France but also in the international intellectual community. His works continue to serve as a foundation for discussions on society, democracy, ecology, and humanity today.

The national memorial at Les Invalides clearly demonstrated the high esteem in which Morin was held not only in France but beyond. It offered attendees a chance to reflect on his legacy and its meaning for contemporary society.

The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence, followed by a military salute and the solemn departure of the coffin as the national anthem played. Attendees quietly bid farewell to one of the twentieth century’s most important thinkers as they left the Cour du Dôme.

With the death of Edgar Morin, an era in the history of French thought has come to an end. Nevertheless, his influence remains alive, and his ideas and writings will continue to inspire future generations of thinkers and researchers.
