Paris – 28.05.2026: The European Commission has approved the support measures set up by the French government for farmers due to the sharply increased prices for non-road diesel fuel. This program is intended to alleviate the economic burdens on agricultural businesses caused by the energy crisis. Within this measure, 70 percent of the additional costs incurred in April 2026 will be reimbursed.
The rise in fuel prices has had a particularly strong impact on agriculture, as many agricultural machines and vehicles rely on diesel. From tractors to harvesters and soil cultivation equipment, the production process is heavily dependent on the energy supply. Therefore, the French authorities have proposed financially supporting farmers to ensure competitiveness and production capacity during this tense period.
According to the Commission’s decision, the support measures comply with EU aid rules as they directly contribute to compensating the additional costs caused by the energy crisis. The measure is limited to the month of April 2026 and serves as short-term support to prevent acute financial bottlenecks in agriculture.
French agriculture has been facing sharply rising production costs for months, with the diesel price for non-road vehicles increasing particularly strongly. This leads to significant additional costs in operating expenses, which without support could threaten the revenues and sustainability of many businesses.
The Commission’s approval enables France to make payments quickly so that farmers experience financial relief and can continue their activities even under difficult conditions. The measure is part of a larger package of government aid repeatedly introduced in recent years to stabilize the agricultural sector, for example in connection with energy crises or market disruptions.
