Paris – 28.05.2026: The European Commission has confirmed the aid established by the French government for farmers due to the sharply rising prices of non-road diesel fuel. This program aims to alleviate the economic burdens on agricultural enterprises caused by the energy crisis. Under the measure, 70 percent of the additional costs in April 2026 will be reimbursed.
The increase in fuel prices particularly affects agriculture, as many agricultural machines and vehicles rely on diesel. From tractors to harvesters to soil cultivation equipment, the production process heavily depends on energy supply. French authorities therefore proposed financially supporting farmers to ensure competitiveness and production capacity during this strained period.
According to the Commission’s decision, the aid complies with EU state aid rules as it is specifically designed to offset the additional costs arising from the energy crisis. The measure is limited to the month of April 2026 and is intended as short-term relief to avoid acute financial bottlenecks in agriculture.
French agriculture has faced sharply rising production costs for months, with the diesel price for non-road vehicles increasing particularly strongly. This results in significant additional operating expenses that could jeopardize the revenues and future viability of many farms without support.
The Commission’s approval enables France to implement payments quickly so that farmers experience financial relief and can maintain their activities even under difficult conditions. The measure is part of a larger package of state supports repeatedly introduced in recent years to stabilize the agricultural sector, such as in connection with energy crises or market disruptions.
Experts view the decision as a sign of the EU supporting member states through targeted interventions in the energy and agricultural sectors. At the same time, the Commission clarifies that such aid must be strictly temporary and targeted to avoid distortions of competition in the internal market.
The current support is linked to similar measures France has implemented under European regulations in the past to relieve farmers in times of crisis and thereby ensure supply security for the population. The state aid reflects the particular importance of agriculture for the national economy and food supply.
Overall, the EU Commission’s approval represents an important step to secure the economic stability of French agriculture in the face of high energy prices and associated challenges, thus keeping farms viable in the future.
