Explosion at Residential Building in Monaco: Ukrainian Businessman Seriously Injured, Investigators Call It a Targeted Attack

Monaco – 30.06.2026: In the night to Monday an explosion shook the entrance area of a residential building on the border with France and seriously injured three people. Surveillance videos show, according to authorities, a person who places a bag in the lobby and leaves the area. The detonation struck a couple and a teenager who apparently were returning home.

According to public prosecutor Stéphane Thibault, this is not an act of terrorism; however, investigators have opened proceedings for attempted murder. Thibault confirmed that one of the injured was admitted to hospital in critical condition. Two other victims — a man and a 13-year-old boy — are no longer in life-threatening condition, he clarified at a press briefing.

Media identify the injured businessman as Ukrainian entrepreneur Vadym Yermolaiev, who has previously appeared in international reports and sanctions lists. Official authorities in Monaco have been cautious about naming him so far; the connection to Yermolaiev, however, is being widely reported by national and international media and is being examined by investigators.

Monaco and French authorities on Tuesday jointly searched for a suspect who apparently fled toward France. Police forces were reinforced on site; the minister of state Christophe Mirmand described it as an unprecedented incident in the principality, which is otherwise considered very safe. Investigators are evaluating video material and traces at the scene; further details about the suspect’s identity have not yet been released.

The injured adults were, according to media reports, taken to hospitals in Nice; CHU Pasteur and the Lenval children’s hospital were named for the teenager. The medical condition of the critically injured remains tense according to official statements; treating doctors withheld information in order not to prejudice the investigations.

The motives for the act are so far unclear. The public prosecutor emphasized that there is currently no indication of a politically motivated violent act in the sense of terrorism. Investigators are examining whether it was a targeted attack on the residents. Given the international dimensions of the person involved, police authorities in France and Monaco are working closely together.

The investigation is being led by the Monegasque judiciary; further statements are to be expected as the investigation progresses. Authorities called on the public to remain calm and asked for information about the person who is said to have deposited the package.
