Farmers Support Firefighters During Major Fire in Gironde

Bordeaux – 26 July 2026: Farmers from Gironde and neighboring departments are supporting firefighters in the major fire north of the Arcachon Basin. They are offering water transport, tractors and other agricultural equipment. According to Franceinfo, the offers of assistance are being recorded by the Gironde Chamber of Agriculture and coordinated with incident command teams. The aim is to ensure that vehicles, tank capacity and manpower are deployed specifically where they can usefully supplement firefighting and logistics operations.

Coordination is essential given the unclear situation. Private helpers must under no circumstances drive to operational areas on their own initiative. Additional vehicles could block access routes, hinder evacuations or endanger emergency personnel. The Chamber of Agriculture therefore matches the resources available from farms with the fire service’s needs and, where necessary, organizes briefings for volunteers.

The fire has kept security forces in Gironde busy since Wednesday, 22 July. The Gendarmerie reported an exceptionally intense fire north of the Arcachon Basin the following day. At that point, 330 mobile and local gendarmes were deployed. They secured evacuated areas, directed traffic and supported the protection of the population. As many as 20,000 people had already been asked to evacuate as a precaution.

Agricultural businesses are assisting primarily with water transport and suitable machinery. This can facilitate supplies and replenishment, as well as enable work in accessible peripheral areas. Firefighting itself, and all decisions regarding access routes, water collection points and specific work assignments, remain the responsibility of professional incident command teams.

At the same time, the prefecture, fire service and police must keep roads clear for fire engines, emergency services and evacuation buses. In addition to ground units, the Gendarmerie is deploying drones, a water patrol unit and off-road vehicles. It monitors restricted areas and secures key transport routes, while wind and weather can change the fire’s spread at any time.

For farmers, the procedure means that they must first report their vehicles, tank capacity and technical capabilities rather than travel directly to affected municipalities. They can only be deployed after consulting the responsible authorities. The Chamber of Agriculture acts as an interface between volunteer helpers and emergency services.

The scale of the operation requires additional transport and supply capacity. However, organized assistance from the agricultural sector remains a supplement to professional forces. Only incident command decides which machinery and tanker trucks are actually needed and where they can be deployed.
