FIFA appoints Argentine referee team for France-Morocco

Boston – 09.07.2026: The FIFA has appointed a completely Argentine refereeing team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final between France and Morocco at Gillette Stadium in Boston. The head referee is Facundo Tello, supported by Argentine assistants on the lines and in the video operations room. The appointment spread quickly across the media and social networks and mainly triggered debates about perceptions of neutrality.

The cause of the discussion is less a formal rules issue than the constellation: Four years after Argentina’s title win in 2022, parts of the public react sensitively to any connection to the then-champion. Critics see an unusual clustering, while supporters point to established FIFA procedures: referees are selected based on performance, fitness, tournament appearances and team harmony. In addition, it has been standard for years that referees do not officiate matches involving their home association – beyond that there are no restrictions.

From the French camp came calming tones before kick-off. Head coach Didier Deschamps and team officials stressed that the focus is on the opponent, not on the referees. FIFA circles also emphasized the independence of the selection process. Press assessments range between “surprising” and “defensible” – a mix of skepticism toward the optics and acceptance of the regulations.

Sportingly, the practical consequences are limited. Matches usually turn on concrete decisions in individual scenes, not on the nationality of the officiating team. Facundo Tello has international experience in continental competitions and FIFA tournaments; it is precisely this routine that is considered a criterion for appointments to knockout matches. Added to this is VAR as a corrective loop with semi-automatic offside detection and calibrated offside lines that operate according to fixed protocols and are intended to reduce personal influences.

For the encounter at Gillette Stadium, which normally seats more than 60,000 spectators, much points to a heated atmosphere – also because of the large fan bases of both teams. The tournament organizers point to standardized communication channels: early announcements to the teams, public publication of appointments and the obligation to document all decisions in a traceable way. This transparency is intended to strengthen trust in the match officiating.

In the end, appearance remains an issue, the rules are clear. The Argentine team has been appointed in accordance with the rules, and the bar is set high – every contentious incident will be under particular scrutiny. For France and Morocco, however, what matters most is advancing in the tournament: the quarter-final is knockout football, and the quality of the decisions will be measured against clear protocols, not passports.
