Alexandre Bernard, chairman of the Union des Métiers et des Industries de l’Hôtellerie (UMIH) in Île-de-France, spoke with ICI Paris Île-de-France about his concerns. He stated that dozens of restaurants on the famous boulevard will be affected by the restrictions and therefore will not be able to open. “Whether Paris wins or loses, the economic damage will be the same,” Bernard said. The closures mainly affect the evening hours, which are crucial for many businesses.
The Paris city administration has implemented extensive measures for security reasons to avoid large gatherings and incidents. According to a report by Europe1, approximately 22,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed across France, of which 8,000 are in Paris and the surrounding areas alone. This also includes the closure of certain metro stations and traffic restrictions in central areas.
However, these security measures have the consequence that access to the restaurants on the Champs-Élysées is made more difficult. Customers may be deterred or discouraged by road closures and a strong police presence. Bernard emphasized that despite the necessity of such measures, a balance must be found from the hosts’ perspective so that local businesses are not disadvantaged.
The city administration, for its part, emphasizes that the safety of citizens and all involved parties has the highest priority, while also taking economic interests into account. The actual impact on the hospitality sector remains uncertain and can only be definitively assessed after the match.
