Helsinki – 03.06.2026: A 27-year-old man in Finland has been charged with sexually abusing 361 children between the ages of 9 and 15 via social media and distributing child pornographic material. The offenses took place between 2019 and 2022. During a search in 2022, security authorities found thousands of videos and images of children on the suspect’s mobile phone. The man contacted the children via the Snapchat platform, urged them to send photos or videos with little or no clothing, and demanded sexual acts. He partially confessed to the acts.
This disturbing news once again raises questions about the safety of children in the digital space. Despite strict laws protecting minors against sexual violence and ensuring their welfare, gaps still exist. A joint report by the Council of Europe and ECPAT International emphasizes the need to increase resources for identifying and supporting victims of sexual exploitation of minors, especially those in particularly vulnerable groups.
Finnish authorities have taken intensified measures in recent years to protect children on the internet. Nevertheless, the current cases show that further efforts are required to safeguard children from sexual exploitation in the digital environment.
Society faces the challenge of making the digital space safer while simultaneously respecting the privacy and rights of children. Strengthened cooperation between governments, technology companies, and civil society organizations is necessary to develop and implement effective protective measures.
The investigation of this case is a step in the right direction, but society must remain vigilant and continuously take measures to protect children from sexual exploitation.
