Numerous communities were affected, including Les Sables-d’Olonne, Mouchamps, Coëx, Venansault, Aubigny-les-Clouzeaux, Bazoges-en-Paillers, and Le Poiré-sur-Vie. The particular challenge for firefighters was not only the number of fires but also their distribution throughout the department. While one fire was being extinguished in one place, reports of a new fire were already arriving.
For firefighters, this meant simultaneous operations at several sites. Many firefighters worked continuously all day long. They were assisted by additional forces from the neighboring Maine-et-Loire department. Specialized fire trucks for suppressing fires in vegetation and forests were also involved to prevent further spread of the flames.
The current weather situation plays a crucial role. In some areas of Vendée, temperatures rose above 30 degrees. At the same time, vegetation in many places has already dried out significantly. Grasses, fields, and the forest edge under such conditions turn into real tinder. Just a small spark is enough, and the fire spreads quickly within minutes. The authorities are closely monitoring the development of events. High temperatures are also forecasted for the coming days. The combination of heat, drought, and possibly increasing winds may contribute to new fires. Accordingly, warnings to the population have an especially urgent character.
Open flames near forests and fields must be strictly avoided. Carelessly discarded cigarette butts can also be dangerous. At the first signs of smoke, rescue services advise immediately notifying the fire department. A quick response often determines whether a small fire can be quickly contained or if it escalates into a large blaze.
Vendée is considered particularly vulnerable to forest and plant fires due to extensive forest areas, numerous resort zones, and the proximity of natural areas to residential neighborhoods. With the start of the summer season, the number of visitors increases significantly. Therefore, in the coming weeks, it is especially important to act responsibly towards nature.
