Firestorm over the Gironde: How a Fire Cloud Intensifies the Danger

Bordeaux – 27/07/2026: A pyrocumulonimbus formed above the major fire in the Gironde on Friday, July 24 – a powerful thunderstorm cloud created by the heat of a fire. Marc Vermeulen, head of the SDIS 33 fire and rescue service, described it as a firestorm unlike anything previously observed in France. The phenomenon occurred as the fire entered a strongly convective phase and rising hot air reached great altitudes.

A pyrocumulonimbus forms only under exceptional conditions. During a very intense vegetation fire, smoke, ash, water vapor and hot air rise rapidly. The moisture condenses in cooler layers of air, and a towering, thunderstorm-like cloud develops from the smoke plume. Unlike an ordinary smoke column, it generates powerful air currents and can therefore directly affect the fire.

This presents a particular danger for emergency crews. Downbursts can abruptly alter the direction and speed of the flame front. At the same time, strong air movements carry embers and burning particles over greater distances, allowing new fire outbreaks to develop beyond the existing fire line. Lightning is also possible. Precipitation from the cloud partly evaporates in intense heat and dry air before reaching the ground, or does not fall in sufficient quantities to effectively suppress the flames.

The fire broke out north of the Arcachon Basin on July 22 and spread rapidly amid heat, drought and wind. The Gendarmerie reported precautionary evacuations and extensive security measures. Road checks and access restrictions were intended to keep emergency routes clear, keep onlookers away and prevent people from returning to endangered areas.

Météo-France had previously described persistent drought and a high to very high wildfire risk in the southwest. According to the weather service, soil moisture across the country was at an exceptionally low level for the season on July 22. This was compounded by the effects of the heatwave from July 4 to 19. During that period, Bordeaux recorded nine consecutive tropical nights, when temperatures did not fall below 20 degrees Celsius. Such nights also delay the overnight cooling of vegetation and soils.

The firestorm was not the cause of the fire, but an expression of its exceptional intensity. It created an additional, difficult-to-predict danger for firefighting operations. According to the Interior Ministry, more than 50,000 hectares had already burned in France since the beginning of the year through July 24; on that day, 32 fires were being fought simultaneously nationwide.
