First holiday weekend: Bison Futé reports nationwide peak of 663 kilometers of congestion

Paris – 04.07.2026: At the start of the summer holidays, the French traffic control center Bison Futé reported a nationwide peak of 663 kilometers of cumulative congestion on Saturday morning. The situation was classified as red in Île-de-France and orange for the rest of the country – a significantly increased traffic volume, but below the extreme days seen in the past.

The greatest pressure was recorded on the departure corridors around Paris. Vehicles were already backed up on the main exit routes in the early hours. On the traditional holiday routes to the south – particularly along the Paris–Lyon–Marseille axis – operators and the media reported recurring bottlenecks. On motorways A6 and A7 delays at times added up to several kilometers, which also noticeably strained alternative routes. Around the Lyon junction, heavy holiday traffic periodically slowed the entire flow toward the Mediterranean.

Bison Futé advises avoiding fixed departure windows, steering clear of peak times and planning trips with the help of current traffic reports. Forecasts had already warned in advance that the weekend would be heavily loaded. Prefectures and motorway operators reminded travelers of safety rules for long journeys, including regular breaks, adequate hydration and adjusted speeds in hot weather. For family trips, authorities recommend planning fuel and rest stops early to avoid unnecessary lane changes before narrowed feeder roads.

Access roads to tourist destinations on the coasts and in mountain regions were also heavily used. Local backlogs developed there that overlapped with long-distance traffic loads. Observers described the situation as noticeably busy, without reaching the peaks of over 900 kilometers recorded in exceptional cases in the past. Overall traffic remained slow but manageable; many travelers reported extended travel times and localized standstills.

Those who still need to depart should consult the official Bison Futé maps before setting off and, if plans are flexible, consider later start times or alternative routes. Where appropriate, train and long-distance bus services can provide relief. For the rest of the weekend, planners expect continued heavy traffic on the southern axes and coastal access roads. Short-term relief is mainly possible outside the classic peak windows in the early morning and late afternoon.

Current notices, regional closures and temporary speed reductions are continuously published via the portals of Bison Futé and the prefectures. Travelers should use navigation services with real-time data and, in the event of congestion, form emergency corridors to allow access for emergency vehicles.
