Fleurance Bids Farewell to Lyhanna: "We Are Not Saying Goodbye to a Symbol, but to an 11-Year-Old Girl"

Fleurance – 06/12/2026: Under a bright sun, several hundred mourners gathered on Friday afternoon at the Fleurance cemetery to say goodbye to 11-year-old Lyhanna. The white funeral procession arrived at the cemetery around 2:30 PM, followed by those present who assembled before a podium displaying a portrait of the girl.

The ceremony began with heartfelt words from the master of ceremonies, who described Lyhanna as a “little chatterbox” with “legendary naturalness.” She emphasized the girl’s “radiant, gentle, and caring” spirit and recalled her ability to “find the stars where others only saw the sky.”

The mayor of Fleurance, Grégory Bobbato, also spoke to those gathered, highlighting the “absolute dignity” with which Lyhanna’s parents faced this heavy ordeal. He stressed that the community was not saying “farewell to a symbol, but to an 11-year-old girl.”

Following the ceremony, white and red balloons as well as doves were released, an event deeply felt by those in attendance. The burial then took place in the closest family circle, in accordance with the family’s wishes.

Lyhanna disappeared on May 29, 2026, after leaving her collège in Fleurance. Her body was discovered on June 4 in an agricultural silo near Puycasquier, about 15 kilometers south of Fleurance. The news of her death shocked the entire region.

The main suspect, Jérôme B., a 41-year-old man who had previously been reported multiple times for child abuse, was arrested in connection with the case. Investigations are ongoing, and the public holds high expectations that those responsible will be held accountable.

The tragedy sparked nationwide discussions about child protection and failures within the justice system. Numerous organizations are calling for stronger measures to better protect children from violence and abuse and to restore public trust in the authorities.

Lyhanna’s funeral gave the community the opportunity to express their grief while also strengthening their call for justice and improved prevention. Many attendees wore white ribbons as a sign of solidarity with the victim and her family.

In Fleurance, the memories of Lyhanna remain alive, now remembered not only as a victim but as a young girl with dreams and hopes. The community’s sympathy reflects the deep impact of this tragic loss and underscores the desire for social change in this sensitive matter.
