The Green Party governing Lyon believes that the production of foie gras “does not ensure the welfare of the animals.”
The city administration of Lyon confirms the ban on the delicacy foie gras at official receptions. This is reported by Franceinfo, confirming a report by Lyon Mag.
Since October 2020, the city of Lyon has not been ordering foie gras. This decision was made by the city administration under Grégory Doucet, the EELV mayor of Lyon, because the production of foie gras obviously “does not ensure the welfare of the animals.” Therefore, the traditional gourmet product is no longer served at receptions and official events in the city of Lyon. A decision that has particularly prompted former Mayor Gérard Collomb to react, calling the ban “a shame for Lyon, the capital of gastronomy.”
Lyon is not the only city to have made this decision: foie gras has also been banned from buffets in Grenoble and Villeurbanne. In Strasbourg, the Green mayor Jeanne Barseghian has also banned foie gras from her official receptions since taking office in July 2020.
