France: Fruits and vegetables defy inflation

In France, fruit and vegetables are withstanding inflation. At market stalls, courgettes in particular have become 47 cents cheaper compared with 2022. How can this be explained?

At the market stalls in Bessières (Haute-Garonne), they are resisting inflation. According to recent studies, the prices of some French fruit and vegetables have even fallen compared with 2022. For example, courgettes have become 47 cents cheaper. Early strawberries (Gariguettes) have also lost a few cents compared with last year. “Strawberries have not become more expensive. They cost the same as last year,” a woman assures France 2. Price stability can be explained by mild weather in spring.

A fragile situation
After two years of frost damage, producers are pleased this year. “There were no frosts. There will be significantly more fruit in our region,” assures the orchardist. Average prices remain stable or are even falling slightly. “However, Gariguette strawberries are quite expensive,” laments a supermarket shopper. According to expert Olivier Dauvers, the situation may not last. Drought in Spain is a cause for concern for producers. If water also becomes scarce in France, this will affect prices.
