France: Fruit and Vegetables Resist Inflation

In France, fruit and vegetables are resisting inflation. On market stalls, courgettes in particular have become 47 cents cheaper compared with 2022. How can this be explained?

On the market stalls in Bessières (Haute-Garonne), they are defying inflation. According to the latest surveys, the prices of some French fruit and vegetables have even fallen compared with 2022. Courgettes, for example, have become 47 cents cheaper. Early strawberries (gariguettes) have also lost a few cents compared with the previous year. “Strawberries have not become more expensive. They cost the same as last year,” a woman tells France 2. Price stability is explained by the mild spring weather.

A fragile situation
After two years marked by frost damage, producers are celebrating this year. “There was no frost. We will have much more fruit in our region,” says a fruit producer. Average prices remain unchanged or are even slightly lower. “Gariguette strawberries are still quite expensive,” regrets a customer in a supermarket. According to expert Olivier Dauvers, however, the situation may not last. The drought in Spain is a source of concern for producers. If water were to become as scarce in France, it would have repercussions on prices.
