France: Fruits and Vegetables Resist Inflation

In France, fruits and vegetables withstand inflation. At market stalls, especially zucchinis have become 47 cents cheaper compared to 2022. How can this be explained?

At the stalls at the market in Bessières (Haute-Garonne), they defy inflation. According to the latest surveys, prices for some French fruits and vegetables have even dropped compared to 2022. Zucchinis, for example, have become 47 cents cheaper. Early strawberries (Gariguettes) have also lost a few cents compared to last year. “The strawberry has not become more expensive. It is as expensive as last year,” a woman assures France 2. The stable prices can be explained by the mild weather in spring.

A fragile situation
After two years of frost damage, producers are happy this year. “There has been no frost. We will have much more fruit in our region,” assures a fruit grower. The average prices remain the same or are even slightly declining. “The Gariguette strawberries are still quite expensive,” laments a customer in a supermarket. According to expert Olivier Dauvers, the situation may not be permanent. A cause for concern for producers is the drought in Spain. If water becomes just as scarce in France, this will affect prices.
