Forest Fire in Gironde Contained, Firefighters Remain on Site

Saumos – 30.07.2026: According to incident command, the large-scale forest fire in northern Gironde has now been contained. However, the fire service is maintaining its extensive deployment in order to quickly combat major flare-ups. On the evening of July 29, the situation was described as under control. For July 30, emergency crews expected more favorable weather conditions that could facilitate their continued work.

The fire had spread in the area around Saumos since July 22 and affected further parts of the department. Areas toward Le Porge and near the Bassin d’Arcachon were also affected. Due to the rapid spread, authorities temporarily ordered extensive protective measures and evacuations.

A forest fire is considered contained when its spread has been stopped or limited. This does not mean that it has been fully extinguished. Hotspots can persist beneath charred wood and in dried-out soil. In dry air, rising temperatures or strengthening winds, there is a risk that they could flare up again. Emergency crews therefore inspect the edges of the fire area, monitor particularly vulnerable sections and extinguish resurgent fires as early as possible.

Weather conditions remain crucial to the ongoing operation. High temperatures and dry vegetation had previously made firefighting efforts more difficult. Cooler air and higher humidity can reduce the risk of renewed spread, but do not eliminate it. Even after a visible easing of the situation, close monitoring of the affected areas is therefore necessary.

The Gironde prefecture had already imposed a particularly high alert level for the forest-fire risk area. This restricted activities that can generate sparks or intense heat, including welding work and the use of cut-off grinders. Vehicles were also not to be parked on dry vegetation, as hot vehicle parts can ignite grass or undergrowth.

In addition to the fire services, security forces and municipal authorities were involved in the protective measures. The Gendarmerie assisted with evacuations, directed traffic and secured affected areas. The operation therefore included not only direct firefighting but also the protection of the population, transport routes and other infrastructure.

The reported stabilization allows emergency crews to focus more closely on hotspots and flare-ups. However, this does not yet amount to an all-clear. The reinforced deployment will remain in place until the affected areas have been permanently secured and no major fire sources remain.
