Fontainebleau Forest Fire: Hundreds Evacuated After a Harrowing Night

Fontainebleau – July 14, 2026: A fire in the Forest of Fontainebleau, southeast of Paris, caused panic among many residents of neighboring municipalities early Monday morning. As the flames spread rapidly, residents near the forest edge had to leave their homes urgently. Those affected said the flames came dangerously close to residential properties within minutes.

Municipalities on the edge of the forest area were particularly severely affected, including Noisy-sur-École, Le Vaudoué and Achères-la-Forêt. The evacuation was a precautionary measure to prevent residents from being endangered by thick smoke, flying embers or a possible spread of the fire. According to consistent reports, around 900 people were moved to safe locations. As of Monday evening, no injuries or destroyed homes had been reported.

The fire broke out on Sunday, July 12, and continued burning overnight. By Monday, the blaze had affected around 800 hectares of forest. The prefect of Seine-et-Marne said in the afternoon that the fire was not yet under control, but that its spread had slowed. Emergency services focused on protecting residential areas and major transport routes.

At times, up to 850 firefighters were involved in the firefighting operation. They received extensive aerial support, including firefighting aircraft and helicopters. For the Île-de-France region, the operation was considered unusual, as firefighting aircraft are rarely deployed there. To support aerial firefighting, aircraft also collected water from the Seine.

For residents, the night mainly meant uncertainty. Some had to leave their homes without knowing whether they would be able to return soon. Authorities organized accommodation, while police, firefighters and other emergency services assisted with the evacuation. Whether people could return to certain areas depended on the development of the fire front and the results of on-site safety inspections.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez visited the emergency site on Monday. He praised the work of the emergency personnel and said that the cause of the fire would be investigated. Officials publicly mentioned indications of possible arson, but no final assessment has yet been made. The investigation and technical analysis of the fire site are ongoing.

The fire highlights the particular vulnerability of this large forest area during dry and hot weather. In the coming days, the key question is whether remaining hotspots can be fully extinguished and whether wind or high temperatures could create new dangers. The command center will continue taking measures, while the affected municipalities are gradually preparing for residents’ return.
