Forest Fire Near Le Porge Continues to Threaten Residential Areas

Le Porge – 26 July 2026: The forest fire in the Gironde continues to keep residents of Le Porge on edge. Since breaking out near Saumos on July 22, the flames have spread toward Le Porge and Lège-Cap-Ferret. On Sunday, firefighters continued to battle flare-ups. For people in the threatened settlements, it meant another day marked by evacuation, smoke and concern for their own homes.

Franceinfo reported from Le Porge on residents trying to protect properties and houses with the means available to them. Firefighters cannot be at every threatened building at the same time, people in the town said. This does not mean that residents are expected to take over the work of emergency crews. Rather, it describes the distressing situation created by a large-scale fire whose fronts can shift rapidly.

Authorities had already ordered extensive precautionary measures in the preceding days. In Le Porge, residents and holidaymakers were moved out of threatened areas; several campsites and the La Jenny holiday village were also affected by evacuations. The municipality issued information on traffic conditions in the town and on roads leading to the beaches. Access routes remained restricted or completely closed because of the emergency operation.

According to the gendarmerie, the spread of the fire was aided by difficult weather conditions. Officers are securing traffic routes and evacuated areas, while also keeping access roads clear for firefighters and rescue services. For those affected, this work is often barely visible, but it enables fire engines to get through and people to be moved out of threatened areas in an orderly manner. The gendarmerie called on the public to respect roadblocks.

For the fire service, it was the fourth day of an exhausting operation. Reinforcements from other départements arrived in the Gironde. Emergency crews focused on containing the flames, extinguishing smouldering hotspots and protecting inhabited areas. Wind and dry vegetation made their work more difficult because they could quickly alter the direction and intensity of the fire.

The evacuations are affecting the region during the peak holiday season. Families, seasonal workers and holiday guests had to find accommodation at short notice or go to assembly points. Nine municipalities, including Le Porge, Lacanau, Carcans, Audenge and Bordeaux, set up reception and temporary accommodation sites for evacuees. The evacuations are intended to protect people while also preventing additional traffic from blocking access routes used by emergency crews.

When residents will be able to return permanently to their homes depends on the progress of firefighting efforts and orders issued by the prefecture. On Sunday evening, the firefighting operation, road closures and protective measures for the evacuated areas remained in place.
