Former local politician spends six days on a stretcher in Orleans emergency department

Orleans – 08/07/2026: A former local politician reportedly spent almost a week on a stretcher in the emergency department of Orleans University Hospital following bleeding. As Franceinfo reported on Friday, the woman waited there for six days and slept five nights on the stretcher. She ultimately signed a declaration accepting discharge at her own responsibility and left the hospital.

What is particularly notable is the length of her stay in the emergency department. According to the report, the patient had been admitted because of bleeding. Her age, her former local political role and the exact diagnosis were not published. It initially also remained unclear whether an inpatient bed had been planned for her and what treatments she received during the six days.

Discharge at one’s own responsibility does not mean that the person’s health condition has improved. Rather, by signing, the patient acknowledges that she is leaving the hospital despite medical advice or before the planned treatment has been completed. The report does not indicate which risks were explained to her or whether she subsequently received medical care elsewhere.

CHU Orleans operates its adult emergency department at its La Source site. According to the hospital, an average of 150 to 160 adults are admitted there each day. On its main website, the institution states that its emergency departments handle a total of 312 daily visits. Medical and surgical emergency services are open around the clock.

These figures demonstrate a high workload, but they do not explain the specific incident. At the time this article was published, no statement from CHU Orleans concerning the stay described by Franceinfo was available. Nor was there any information about an internal review or possible staffing and organizational causes. The report alone therefore does not allow any conclusion that there was a treatment error.

As early as January 2025, the city of Orleans had warned of an exceptionally heavy strain on the local emergency department. At that time, according to the municipality, nearly 200 people arrived there every day; more than 30 of them had to be admitted to hospital.
