France Arrests Russian Oil Tanker “Tagor” off Brittany

Brest – 06/02/2026: On May 31, 2026, the French Navy conducted an operation in the North Atlantic region, intercepting the Russian oil tanker “Tagor.” The tanker had come from Murmansk, Russia, and was suspected of flying a false flag. This measure is part of France’s intensified efforts against the so-called Russian “ghost fleet,” which attempts to circumvent international sanctions.

The operation took place more than 400 nautical miles west of Brittany. After boarding the vessel, verification of the ship’s documents confirmed suspicions regarding the flag irregularity. Subsequently, the public prosecutor of Brest was informed, and the tanker was diverted in accordance with international law. It is currently being escorted by the French Navy to an anchorage for further investigations.

President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the importance of this action, stating that it is “unacceptable for ships to circumvent international sanctions, violate maritime law, and finance the war that Russia has been waging against Ukraine for over four years.” He underlined France’s “constant and total” determination in this area.

The “Tagor” is the fourth Russian oil tanker France has intercepted since September 2025 as part of efforts to combat the “ghost fleet.” Previously, the “Boracay” in September 2025, the “Grinch” in January 2026, and the “Deyna” in March 2026 were stopped in the Mediterranean region.

The Russian government reacted critically to the recent arrest, labeling the action as “illegal.” Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, said such actions “border on international piracy” and that Russia is taking measures to ensure the safety of its ships.

These events highlight the ongoing tensions in international trade and Western efforts to curb Russian activities related to the Ukraine crisis. France’s resolute stance sends a clear signal to other nations trying to bypass sanctions or disregard international laws.

French authorities have announced plans to further strengthen their surveillance and control measures in the coming months to ensure that violations of international norms and sanctions do not go unpunished. This strategy may also include intensified cooperation with other European countries and international partners to ensure more effective control of maritime routes.

Overall, this incident illustrates the complexity and challenges in international maritime traffic, especially in the context of geopolitical tensions and enforcement of sanctions. The international community faces the task of developing effective mechanisms to ensure compliance with international laws and agreements while guaranteeing safety and free trade on the world’s seas.

The ongoing developments in this situation will be closely monitored, as it could potentially affect international relations and the stability of global trade routes.
