France Extends Fishing Ban in the Bay of Biscay to Protect Dolphins

Paris – 18.06.2026: The French government has decided to extend the closure of the Bay of Biscay to fishing during part of the upcoming winter in order to protect the dolphin population. This measure is expected to apply from January 22 to February 20, 2027, and affects all fishing vessels longer than eight meters operating in this region.

The decision follows the positive results of previous closures in 2024 and 2025. According to reports from the French observatory PELAGIS, the measure led to a significant reduction in dolphin mortality due to accidental catches. In the winter of 2024-2025, 1,900 dolphins were found in the western Channel region and the Atlantic, compared to an average of 4,700 catches per year between 2017 and 2023.

To mitigate the impact on the fishing industry, the French government has established a compensation program. Around 21 million euros will be provided to support the affected fishing businesses during the closure period. This compensation aims to offset financial losses and ensure the economic stability of the sector.

The measure was developed in close collaboration with fishing professionals and the scientific community. The goal is to reduce accidental catches of dolphins and other small whales, thereby contributing to the protection of these protected species. The closure of the Bay of Biscay to fishing is considered one of the most effective measures to reduce dolphin mortality caused by human activities.

Despite the positive outcomes of previous closures, challenges remain. Some fishing vessels, especially smaller boats, are exempt from the measure, leading to discussions about the need for a more comprehensive closure. Additionally, questions remain about whether the compensation payments are sufficient to fully cover the industry’s financial losses.

The French government emphasizes the importance of this measure for protecting marine biodiversity and the long-term sustainability of the fishing industry. It is expected that the closure of the Bay of Biscay next winter will make a further contribution to the recovery of the dolphin population. The effectiveness of this measure will continue to be monitored through scientific studies and observations to enable adjustments if necessary.

Overall, the French government’s decision to extend the Bay of Biscay fishing closure demonstrates a strong commitment to protecting the marine environment and preserving dolphin populations. The combination of protective measures and financial support for the fishing industry represents an integrative approach that considers both ecological and economic aspects.
