France showcases a large-scale military parade in Paris on National Day

Paris – 14 July 2026: On Tuesday, the main celebrations for France’s National Day began on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. The head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces is reviewing the traditional military parade, which this year is held under the banner of Europe’s strategic strengthening. The Ministry of Defence announced a significantly larger display of French and allied capabilities than at previous events.

According to the ministry, 6,686 women and men are taking part in the parade. A total of 315 vehicles, 98 aircraft, 33 helicopters and 193 horses are planned. In addition to units from the army, navy, and air and space forces, internal security forces and foreign delegations are participating. In total, 36 partner countries are expected to be represented.

The presentation is intended not only to emphasize the ceremonial nature of National Day, but also to clearly demonstrate the deployment of modern armed forces. For the first time, a coordinated demonstration of ground forces and air support is planned. Command, intelligence, logistics, protection, medical support and military means of action will thus be presented as interconnected components of an operation.

According to the ministry, the focus of the army is on the 501st Tank Regiment and the 3rd Marine Artillery Regiment. Both formations symbolize France’s contribution to securing NATO’s eastern flank. The selection underscores the parade’s European emphasis, although the event should not be understood as a direct announcement of an operation.

The air and space forces are also involved in significant numbers. The flypast is opened by the Patrouille de France with nine Alphajets. More than 130 aircraft are expected in total for the flypast. The program includes military aircraft, transport planes, helicopters and other systems intended to demonstrate the joint deployment of different branches of the armed forces.

Military medicine also plays a special role. Around 270 pupils and trainees from the Lyon-Bron Military Health Schools and Val-de-Grâce will march along the avenue. For the first time in 170 years, they will once again wear the historic Carabins rouges uniform. This will demonstrate the role of medical support and training in the armed forces.

According to the Ministry of Defence, preparations for the Paris ceremony took months and included repeated rehearsals, security planning and coordination among numerous civilian and military bodies. The parade on 14 July remains one of France’s most important public events. The 2026 event directly links the national celebration with the question of how France and its European partners are responding to changed security circumstances.
