France pays national tribute to Edgar Morin

Paris – June 2, 2026: On the upcoming Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the late philosopher and sociologist Edgar Morin will be commemorated in a grand ceremony held at the Invalides institution in Paris. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and will be presided over by President Emmanuel Macron. Originally, the ceremony was scheduled to take place in the Cour d’Honneur of the Invalides, but due to renovation work, this commemorative event will be held in the Cour du Dôme.

Edgar Morin was born Edgar Nahoum into a Jewish family from Thessaloniki, Greece, before migrating to Paris. In 1941, he joined the French Communist Party and participated in resistance activities, using the pseudonym Morin. His intellectual career is marked by numerous writings, including “Autocritique” (1959), in which he reflected on his expulsion from the Communist Party and on Stalinism. “La Rumeur d’Orléans” (1969) dealt with anti-Semitic rumors, and “La Méthode” (1977–2004) is his major work, consisting of six volumes. He also dedicated several books to ecological themes, which he considered particularly important.

As a historian, philosopher, and scientist, Morin sought to break down disciplinary boundaries. By advocating an interdisciplinary perspective, he was able to understand and convey the complex interrelations of modern society. Despite his advanced age, he remained a respected voice in intellectual discourse and received numerous accolades from the media for his insights.

President Emmanuel Macron praised Morin as “a soldier of resistance and a dedicated and free thinker, a writer and thinker of the century, and a protector of nature and peoples.” He called Morin “the embodiment of humanism,” emphasizing “his complex thoughts, rich life, and universal spirit.”

The commemorative event will be covered by various media. On Sunday, June 1, at 6:40 p.m., France Télévisions will broadcast special editions of “En société” and “C politique” on France 5, celebrating Morin’s life and achievements, and on Wednesday, June 3, at 9:05 p.m., France 5 will present a special edition of “La Grande Librairie” showcasing the most important moments of his numerous television appearances.

Edgar Morin left a significant intellectual legacy that greatly influenced the French intellectual scene. His interdisciplinary approach and unwavering commitment to a more just and sustainable world will continue to inspire many in the future.
