Paris – 09.07.2026: The French Interior Ministry and the Prefecture of Île-de-France have ordered an unusually large security deployment for the France–Morocco match scheduled for the evening. According to official figures, around 20,000 police and gendarmerie personnel will be mobilized nationwide; about 8,000 of those forces are planned for Paris. The aim is to accompany large fan gatherings, secure critical nodes and be able to intervene quickly in the event of incidents.
The trigger for the reinforcement is an internal assessment by the Renseignements territoriaux (RT). The confidential memo, cited by several media outlets, points to an increased risk of public order disruptions. It names potentially dense crowds in fan zones, a heated atmosphere around the match and the danger of isolated riots during arrival and departure phases. Security authorities also refer to experiences from previous football evenings in which spontaneous convoys, firecrackers and pyrotechnics in inner-city areas led to tense situations.
The Paris prefecture specifies the approach: fan zones will be closely monitored, inflows controlled by temporary closures and pedestrian routing. Additional presence is planned around transport hubs, key metro interchange points and tourist areas. If necessary, individual streets will be temporarily closed to vehicle traffic to keep access clear for rescue and response teams. The city is providing information about adjusted routes and possible delays and asks residents to avoid shortcuts through heavily frequented areas.
At the coordination level, the Centre de Coordination Opérationnelle de Sécurité (CCOS) at the prefecture has been activated. Police, gendarmerie, emergency services and transport operators coordinate operational plans, situation reports and communication lines there in real time. The Interior Ministry emphasizes that mobile units are on standby to be deployed rapidly in case of local escalations. Social media teams have been reinforced in parallel to quickly pick up tips from the public and counter misinformation.
The scale of the deployment follows major incidents in recent years in which France deployed tens of thousands of officers for sporting events and state visits. Officially, this is justified by a public order policy prioritized since 2024/2025 and expanded intervention powers. Supporters see this as necessary prevention for an exceptional evening that can be planned. Critics call for proportionality and clear justification of measures so as not to undermine the trust of uninvolved spectators.
Authorities are calling on fans and residents to follow instructions on site, avoid glass bottles and pyrotechnics and allow enough time for journeys. Information on closed areas and fan routes is being updated via the prefecture’s and the city’s channels. How calm the evening will be depends largely on discipline in the fan zones and the dispersal after the end of the match.
