France mobilizes up to 80,000 security forces for National Day

Paris – 13 July 2026: France is placing the Bastille Day celebrations on 14 July under protection of exceptional scale. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on television on Monday evening that 80,000 police officers and gendarmes were mobilized across the country for the night. In the Paris region, 7,000 members of the security forces and 2,000 firefighters are also to be deployed on Tuesday.

The operation is focused on the military parade on the Champs-Elysees, fireworks, public festivities and the capital’s main traffic routes. Police and gendarmerie are also to limit the typical risks of a festive night, such as violence, vandalism and the misuse of pyrotechnic devices. Strict bans on the sale, transport, possession and use of fireworks remain in force throughout the country.

According to the minister’s explanations, the figure of 80,000 officers announced on Monday concerns the imminent night. Other figures, also published on 13 July, report 70,000 police officers and gendarmes across the country for 14 July. The discrepancy could be explained by different deployment periods or counting methods; the Interior Ministry initially did not provide a detailed breakdown.

In the capital, the holiday schedule gives the security operation a special dimension. The parade of the armed forces and internal security services takes place on Tuesday, 14 July, on the Champs-Elysees. The Ministry of the Armed Forces emphasizes that police, gendarmerie, firefighters and customs jointly carry out public security, risk prevention and crisis management missions in France.

This is compounded by a tense situation caused by numerous vegetation and forest fires in southern France. Laurent Nunez visited Ille-sur-Tet in the Pyrenees-Orientales on 6 July, which was affected by a major fire. According to the gendarmerie, the fire had ravaged nearly 4,900 hectares of vegetation in the Aspres massif. Several other departments have been affected by fires in recent days.

The combination of activity related to the national holiday, the heavy summer demand on response teams and firefighting increases logistical pressure on the security authorities. The nationwide mobilization must therefore not only secure symbolic sites, but also maintain reserves for local incidents. Fire and rescue services in particular must simultaneously prepare for gatherings, heat and possible new fire outbreaks.

Nunez also referred to the continuing terrorist threat, ten years after the Nice attack of 14 July 2016. On that day, on the Promenade des Anglais, 86 people were killed and hundreds more were injured. The historic date gives this year’s security operation additional political and operational importance, although authorities have not identified any new concrete threat.
