France reinforces its border with Spain with 334 additional security personnel

Perpignan – 01/08/2026: France is increasing the number of additional security personnel at the border with Spain to 334 police officers and gendarmes. According to Franceinfo, the reinforcement will be increased fivefold this Saturday compared with its previous level. The measure comes during the peak summer travel season, when roads, railway stations and border crossings are under particularly heavy strain.

The figure of 334 refers to the additional personnel deployed, not the total staffing level of the services operating at the border. The authorities active there include, in particular, the border police, the national gendarmerie and customs. It was initially unknown how long the reinforcement would remain in place and how the officers would be distributed across the individual border sections.

The French-Spanish border is of major importance for passenger travel, freight flows and regional commuters. Key road connections include the crossing at Le Perthus in the Pyrenees-Orientales department and the route at Hendaye in the French Basque Country. There are also smaller roads through the Pyrenees as well as cross-border rail connections. The additional personnel can therefore be deployed both at crossings and in the surrounding area.

Border controls there serve, among other purposes, efforts against human smuggling, drug trafficking and other forms of cross-border crime. Monitoring irregular migration and securing heavily used transport routes are also among the possible tasks. However, the available information did not provide further details on the operational priorities for the newly announced increase.

France and Spain have worked together for years through joint police and customs structures. The Police and Customs Cooperation Centre in Hendaye consolidates information from both countries and supports investigations with a cross-border dimension. According to the Gendarmerie, the facility facilitates direct exchanges between the responsible services and the coordination of joint measures.

The deployment is also part of France’s security planning for the summer months. According to the Gendarmerie, this year’s protection program runs from June 22 to September 13. Nationwide, 2,200 additional gendarmes are planned to support particularly strained units in holiday areas, at transport hubs and where there are large visitor flows.

Between France and Spain, this is an internal border within the Schengen area, where permanent systematic checks on persons are generally not planned. Temporary controls and increased police deployments remain possible under certain conditions, however. With the 334 additional personnel, France is now increasing its visible presence along one of its most important European transit corridors.
