Paris – 28.05.2026: France is currently affected by an exceptional heatwave bringing record temperatures for the season. In several regions, including Paris, temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius were recorded on Wednesday, an unusually high value for May. These extreme peaks have already caused seven deaths, mainly among elderly people and those with pre-existing health conditions.
The national meteorological institute Météo-France has issued an orange alert for intense heat for many departments, including the capital. This alert is valid until the early hours of Friday morning. Authorities recommend that the population stay in the shade or air-conditioned environments as much as possible during the hottest hours, drink sufficiently, and avoid physical exertion. In addition, special attention is advised for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
The government led by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is under growing criticism for its handling of the crisis. Despite a short-term emergency meeting in which a “resilience plan until September” was presented, opposition parties and environmental associations criticize the hesitant response. Marine Tondelier, president of the Green party “Les Écologistes,” is calling for more extensive measures in view of the increasing number of extreme weather events, including the introduction of a “climate protection leave.” This model, already tested in Spain, allows workers to take up to five additional days off during extreme heat days.
Despite the alerts being communicated clearly, many people continue with their usual activities, increasing the risk of further heat-related illnesses. The government urges the population to take preventive recommendations seriously and seek immediate medical assistance in case of symptoms.
The current heatwave is linked to the effects of global climate change, which amplifies extreme weather events. Scientific studies warn that more frequent and intense heatwaves could increase further if effective climate protection and adaptation measures are not adopted.
A gradual drop in temperatures is forecast for the coming days, starting from western France. However, the simultaneous increase in humidity could maintain a high level of discomfort for the population. Authorities are constantly monitoring the situation and are ready to introduce further protection measures if necessary.
The latest events underline the importance of greater prevention and adaptation to climate change at all levels. Only through close collaboration between politics, science, and society will it be possible to increase resilience to such extreme events and limit the consequences for health and infrastructure.
The population is continuously urged to follow the current weather alerts and act accordingly to minimize health risks caused by the heat.
