France’s firefighters rely on controlled backfires, satellites and Air Tractor operations

Paris – 08.07.2026: France’s firefighters are adapting their tactics to an early and regionally intense fire season. Incident commanders report the coordinated use of controlled backfires, increased satellite reconnaissance and intensified air support by nimble Air Tractor firefighting aircraft. The Interior Ministry and prefectures are directing measures together with SDIS units in the départements to slow fire fronts in hard-to-reach terrain and to secure personnel in a targeted way.

Controlled backfires are set, according to commanders, only under strictly defined conditions: stable winds, sufficient anchor points and coordinated ground and air support are considered the minimum standard. The goal is to remove fuel in a controlled way, stabilize flanks and steer the main front into safer terrain. Experts warn at the same time that abrupt wind shifts or extremely dry air situations can increase the risk — approvals are therefore only issued after a joint assessment of the situation.

In parallel, authorities are intensifying the use of satellite data, thermal imagery and other remote sensing. National and EU-supported services provide near real-time indications of smoldering embers, hotspots at fire edges and changes in the direction of spread. This information feeds into prioritization decisions at operations centers: water drops, ground attacks and protective measures for communities can thus be scheduled more tightly, while the impact of measures taken is continuously reviewed.

In the air, a mix of platforms complements the large water bombers. Smaller Air Tractors can operate lower, more precisely and more repeatedly on steep slopes or in valleys where large machines reach their limits. According to situation reports they are used especially for flank protection, pinpoint drops along firebreaks and for the rapid stabilization of new outbreaks. The combination of different aircraft types is intended to shorten response times and smooth the transition between reconnaissance, initial strike and follow-up.

The Interior Ministry and the Direction Générale de la Sécurité Civile additionally coordinate redeployed forces, reserve vehicles and logistics hubs. Several départements are receiving temporary reinforcements; international assistance is available via EU mechanisms if needed. Prefectures also stress the importance of prevention: vegetation maintenance, firebreaks, access routes and raising public awareness remain central elements to keep operations manageable. Further training in tactical fires and safety protocols has been announced for the teams.

The course of events in the coming days will depend heavily on wind, temperature and soil moisture. Authorities call for vigilance, point to local behavioral rules and urge keeping access routes clear for emergency vehicles. Backfires and air attacks are considered elements of a broader approach that combines rapid reconnaissance, graduated response plans and close coordination between operations centers, ground crews and air assets.
