France is experiencing a weather situation at the end of May that normally corresponds to mid-summer. A powerful so-called “heat dome” is currently spreading over much of the country and causing temperatures that in many places clearly exceed 30 degrees. Especially affected are the regions in the west, around Paris, as well as parts of the southwest and the Rhône valley.
Meteorologists speak of an extraordinary situation. The heat dome works like a huge lid in the sky: a stable high-pressure system traps the warm air that previously flowed from North Africa through Spain to France. The heat literally accumulates over the country. At night it hardly cools down, and that is precisely what makes these weather conditions so difficult for the human body.
In some regions temperatures reach up to 35 or even 36 degrees. For the end of May, these values are extremely rare. Many French people already rely on fans, closed blinds, and the classic water bottles in the fridge. On the terraces in Bordeaux or Lyon, customers desperately seek the few places with shade. “This feels more like July,” can be heard these days in many places.
Particularly notable: never since the introduction of the French heat alert system in 2004 has an alarm level been activated so early in the year. The meteorological service Météo-France has already placed numerous departments under increased vigilance. These include parts of Brittany, the greater Paris area, and regions along the Atlantic coast.
Health authorities call for caution. Especially the elderly, children, and those who work outdoors are considered at risk. Even the yellow alert level indicates a real health risk. Doctors advise avoiding physical exertion during the hottest hours, drinking enough water, and keeping homes as cool as possible. It may seem trivial, but these simple rules are often forgotten in everyday life.
At the same time, the debate on climate change is reignited. Climate scientists have observed for years that early and intense heat periods are becoming increasingly common in Europe. What was once considered an exception is slowly becoming the new reality. France is one of the European countries that in recent years has repeatedly suffered extreme summers.
The memory of the devastating heatwave of 2003 remains deeply ingrained there to this day. On that occasion, thousands of people died due to the extreme temperatures. Since then, the state responds with much more awareness to early warning signs. Schools, hospitals, and care centers are now under special surveillance whenever temperatures remain high for several days.
It is not yet officially a large-scale national heat crisis. But many French already suspect that the summer of 2026 may have started very early. And with full intensity.
