François Bayrou Warns of Economic Expropriation in New Book

Paris – 21.06.2026: Former French Prime Minister François Bayrou presented his latest book “Alarm Stage Red for the Future of France” on the program “Tout est politique” on Franceinfo. In the interview on Sunday evening, Bayrou also referred to the ongoing heatwave in France, whose consequences he described as a serious challenge for society and the economy. A key element of his argument is a fundamental critique of the development of social and economic conditions in France. Bayrou warns that citizens could increasingly be deprived of their assets and creative power in the future. Specifically, he speaks of the “expropriation of everything we create.”

The former Prime Minister sees his new publication as a kind of wake-up call. He provides a profound analysis of the social, economic, and political trends that, in his view, lead to a gradual erosion of individual freedom and entrepreneurial spirit. The already visible consequences of climate change, such as the extreme summer heat, intensify this dynamic and make societal tensions clearly noticeable. Bayrou emphasizes the necessity to protect the framework conditions for innovation and private initiative to counter increasing centralization and regulation.

In his book, Bayrou also offers a critical reflection on the role of the state and the responsibility of political leadership. He calls for politics that do not turn citizens into objects of restrictions and coercion but respect and strengthen them as actors of a vibrant democracy. He describes the current handling of crises, for example, blindness to economic and social realities as well as excessive interventions, as dangerous.

The former Prime Minister’s warnings aim to provoke a broad debate on the future of France, especially in the context of global challenges such as climate change, economic restructuring, and geopolitical uncertainties. Bayrou sees a risk in the current development that the political class increasingly disconnects from and fails to sufficiently include and support the social base.

His book presentation on the French media program was well received by a broad audience. It reflects the concern of many parts of the population that increasing state intervention and regulatory measures could endanger economic autonomy and personal freedom. Bayrou is regarded as a centrist who traditionally advocates a balance between state and market.

Topics such as climate, social justice, and economic dynamism are therefore central to current political debates, which Bayrou’s book aims to invigorate. Given the extreme summer temperatures, for instance, addressing the consequences of climate change is also seen as part of social renewal, which must not come at the expense of freedom.

Finally, Bayrou’s publication makes clear that a lively and controversial debate about fundamental questions of the state and social order is still to be expected in France. His appeal is aimed equally at politics, business, and citizens: The future of France is at stake if the country’s creative forces are not adequately protected and promoted.
