François Hollande Surprises with Candidacy in 2024 Parliamentary Elections

Tulle – 15.06.2024: In a surprising twist in French politics, former President François Hollande has announced his candidacy for the upcoming parliamentary elections. In a press conference in Tulle, he stated that he would run in the first constituency of Corrèze, supported by the Nouveau Front Populaire. Hollande emphasized that the current political situation is “particularly serious” and warned of the danger of a power takeover by the Rassemblement National (RN). He said: “In this extraordinary situation, an extraordinary decision is necessary.”

Hollande, who served as a deputy for Corrèze from 1997 to 2012, is thus returning to his political home. His decision to run again was seen by many observers as an attempt to reshape the political landscape of the left and counter the growing threat posed by the RN. Political scientist Pierre-Yves Rougeyron commented: “He is a former president, he will not be satisfied with just one seat in Corrèze.”

The announcement by Hollande came ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for June 30 and July 7, 2024. In the first round of voting, he received 37.65% of the votes, placing ahead of RN candidate Maïtey Pouget, who garnered 31.43%, and incumbent deputy Francis Dubois of the Republicans with 25.28%. In the runoff, Hollande secured victory with 43.29% of the vote and was once again elected as deputy of Corrèze.

His return to politics was widely seen as an effort to reshape the left’s political landscape and counter the rising threat of the RN. Hollande himself declared that he was not running to form a government but to combat the far right. He said: “I am not a candidate to form a government, but to fight the far right.”
