Paris – 17.06.2026: France is preparing for a second exceptionally early heatwave, which will be felt from today, June 17, 2026. According to Météo-France, temperatures between 34 and 40 degrees Celsius are expected in large parts of the country, including Paris. This development poses a significant strain on the population, infrastructure, and environment.
Yellow weather warnings have been issued for 52 départements, with orange warnings possibly following in particularly affected regions. Authorities urge caution and recommend taking heat-related measures in the coming days to minimize health risks. This is especially important given ongoing school exams and major events like the Fête de la Musique, which will take place on the upcoming Sunday.
The predicted heatwave is the second of the year and is seen as another sign of the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events observed in the context of human-induced climate change. Temperatures are expected to peak around the summer solstice, accompanied by so-called “tropical nights” with values above 25 degrees, significantly above the usual seasonal average temperatures.
There has been criticism of the government for insufficient precautions taken so far, such as improving heat insulation of buildings or adapting urban spaces to increasing heat periods. Especially in southern France, the risk of forest fires is rising significantly due to the heat and drought periods. Climate researchers call for both short-term adaptation measures like cooling solutions for homes and more greenery in cities, as well as long-term strategies to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Although France’s emissions have decreased in recent years, the measures are insufficient to meet national climate targets and to effectively curb global warming. Authorities appeal to the public to stay well hydrated, remain in cool rooms, and limit physical exertion. Windows and shutters should remain closed during the day to lower indoor temperatures.
The duration of the heatwave remains uncertain, with a slight temperature drop possibly emerging starting the week around June 22. Expected thunderstorms could also contribute to cooling. The second heatwave before the official start of summer is a clear indication of the worsening climatic conditions, which continue to increase due to the ongoing use of fossil fuels.
Overall, this event underscores the urgency of comprehensive adaptation and climate protection measures to better cope with the impacts of extreme heat and to secure quality of life in the future.
