French Combat Divers Prepare for Missions in the Strait of Hormuz

Toulon – 18.06.2026: In light of increasing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, French combat divers of the Marine nationale are preparing in Toulon for possible missions. Their goal is to neutralize mines and ensure the safety of one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

The combat divers, stationed in Toulon, specialize in neutralizing mines and other explosive threats. They operate both in domestic and international waters to guarantee the safety of shipping lanes. Their missions are crucial for maintaining free and secure trade routes.

In recent years, the combat divers have demonstrated their skills in various international exercises. In April 2025, they took part in the EAST DOLPHIN 25 exercise in the United Arab Emirates. This exercise aimed to strengthen cooperation between French and Emirati forces in the field of mine countermeasures. Among other activities, joint dives and the use of sonar equipment for mine detection were conducted.

The French Navy has specialized units responsible for mine countermeasures. These groups of combat divers focus on neutralizing mines and other explosive hazards. They operate both in national waters and international waters to ensure the safety of shipping lanes.

The training of the combat divers is demanding and includes both theoretical and practical components. They learn to identify and neutralize different types of mines and are trained in the use of specialized equipment. Their operations are vital for maintaining free and safe trade routes.

Given the current tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, the role of the combat divers is of particular importance. Their ability to respond quickly and effectively to threats significantly contributes to the safety of international shipping. The French Navy therefore remains ready to deploy its specialized units to ensure security in this strategically critical region.

Collaboration with international partners, as demonstrated in the EAST DOLPHIN 25 exercise, is a key part of the French Navy’s strategy. Such exercises not only improve technical skills but also strengthen cooperation and mutual trust among armed forces.

Overall, the preparation of the French combat divers for potential missions in the Strait of Hormuz underscores France’s commitment to the safety of international shipping and stability in geopolitically sensitive regions. Their expertise and readiness are essential to respond quickly and effectively to potential threats.
