Fraud reports rise in France as heatwave drives air conditioner purchases

Paris – 07.07.2026: In France, reports of fraud related to the purchase of portable air conditioners have increased since the country experienced another heatwave in early July. Consumers report fake online shops, so-called flash deals and devices that, on delivery, do not match the advertised specifications or do not arrive at all. The strong demand, triggered by persistently high temperatures, creates an environment in which criminals lure buyers with supposed bargains, consumer protection groups say.

Typical scams include orders not being delivered after prepayment, the shipment of inferior or damaged goods, and drastic price markups by unofficial resellers on classified ad platforms. Observers also report overcrowded stores when major retailers launch promotions, which makes it harder to keep track and can open the door to unscrupulous intermediaries. On social networks, lists of alleged brands and websites circulate that use aggressive advertising, for example with misleading energy or cooling-performance claims.

The body responsible for policing unfair commercial practices is the Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF). In its guidance, the authority emphasizes the importance of secure payment methods, careful checking of the imprint/legal notice, contact details and withdrawal terms, and warns of signs such as unrealistically low prices, urgent countdown timers and missing reviews. For complaints and reports, the state platform SignalConso is available, through which complaints are recorded and, if necessary, investigations can be initiated. Anyone who notices unauthorized debits should immediately inform their bank and also file a report with the police or gendarmerie.

Consumer organizations advise buying from verified retailers, scrutinizing customer reviews and reading return policies carefully. For portable air conditioners, it is also worth checking technical key data such as energy efficiency, cooling capacity (BTU or kW), noise level, warranty and available customer service. Overpriced resales—for example on classified ad portals asking many times the list price—are considered a clear warning sign. Reputable providers usually publish full product data sheets and transparent delivery conditions.

In view of the persistent heat, consumer advocates and political voices are calling for intensified checks against fake shops and clear information campaigns to prevent impulsive bad purchases. In addition to immediate measures, they recommend considering mid-term alternatives to outright device purchases: maintenance of existing systems, professional installation, and, in rental properties, coordinating with the building management where applicable. For households on a limited budget, interim solutions such as fans, shading and nighttime ventilation can help until the market situation becomes clearer. Those already affected should secure all receipts, order confirmations and correspondence and document the case through the official channels.
