French electronic music scene mourns after Kavinsky’s death

Paris – 30 July 2026: The French electronic music scene is mourning Kavinsky. The musician and producer, whose real name was Vincent Belorgey, was found unresponsive in his Paris apartment on the evening of Tuesday, 28 July. He was 50 years old and would have celebrated his 51st birthday on 31 July. The Paris public prosecutor’s office launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances of his death. According to the initial findings of emergency responders, there was no evidence of foul play at the scene.

The news of his death was followed by numerous tributes. Angèle, The Weeknd, Belgian DJ Amélie Lens and actor Eric Judor were among the artists who publicly remembered Kavinsky. Representatives of French politics also paid tribute to the musician. The reactions testify to an impact that extended far beyond the French club scene.

Kavinsky’s sound created a small cinema in the mind: shimmering synthesizers, insistent basslines and the image of a nighttime drive through a city without a destination. His artistic persona was said to have crashed at the wheel of a Ferrari in 1986 and returned as one of the undead. Wearing sunglasses and a varsity jacket, it embodied a laconic myth fueled by 1980s pop, video games and American genre cinema.

Kavinsky became known worldwide through “Nightcall”, which accompanied a key scene in Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 film “Drive”. Lovefoxxx, singer of Brazilian band CSS, performed the female vocal part; Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk contributed to the production. The track became a prime example of synthwave, the electronic style that recombines the sounds and visual worlds of the 1980s. Yet Kavinsky did not turn it into mere nostalgia, but into a cool, precisely staged contemporary sound.

Belorgey was born in Paris in 1975 and grew up in Seine-Saint-Denis. He found his way into electronic music production through Quentin Dupieux, known musically as Mr. Oizo. He established himself on the French scene with the EPs “Teddy Boy” and “1986”. The album “Outrun” brought together his themes of engines, neon light and melancholy in 2013; “Reborn” followed in 2022.

Kavinsky made a widely noticed return to the major stage at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris on 11 August 2024. Together with Angèle and Phoenix, he performed “Nightcall” at the Stade de France, reaching a global television audience.

Kavinsky had been announced as the headliner of the Gärten on the Beach festival at Deauville-Clairefontaine Racecourse in Tourgéville on 8 August 2026. His name appeared on the lineup alongside Bakermat, Oden & Fatzo and Bellaire.
