Fuel Prices Above Two Euros: Holidaymakers Adjust Travel Plans

Paris – 21 July 2026: Rising fuel prices are putting pressure on travellers at the start of the summer holidays. France’s public broadcaster Franceinfo reported on Tuesday that average prices at petrol stations had once again exceeded the two-euro-per-litre mark. The report is based on observations from motorists who are reconsidering their holiday plans because of the additional costs.

Families and households that depend on cars for longer journeys are feeling the impact directly. Even a few additional cents per litre significantly increase the cost of a round trip when a vehicle needs to be filled up. According to Franceinfo, some of those affected are therefore considering shorter destinations, fewer excursions at their destination or alternative means of transport.

Prices still vary considerably depending on the type of fuel, region and petrol station. A nationwide average therefore does not reflect the costs faced by every individual motorist. Prices can be higher, particularly on motorways and in heavily frequented holiday regions. For consumers, comparing different outlets before departure remains especially important.

The government platform prix-carburants.gouv.fr publishes open data on prices reported by petrol stations in France. The Ministry of Economy notes that the data are updated regularly and cover outlets registered in the government system. The information makes it easier to check price differences in the surrounding area or along a planned route.

The latest increase comes during a particularly busy travel period. In July and August, millions of people in France travel longer distances to reach holiday destinations on the coast, in the mountains or with relatives. Higher spending at the pump therefore coincides with other holiday costs such as tolls, accommodation, food and leisure activities.

No general relief measure for private motorists has been announced in connection with the current price increase. Developments depend, among other things, on international crude oil and refined product markets, exchange rates, taxes and distribution costs. These factors are not passed on to petrol station prices in full, immediately or to the same extent.

For travellers, the situation primarily means factoring mobility costs into the holiday budget at an early stage. Those with flexible schedules can plan fuel stops away from motorways and compare local prices. The current breach of the two-euro mark once again highlights how strongly the holiday planning of many households depends on the cost of fossil fuels.
