Fleurance – 06/07/2026: On June 7, 2026, around 6,000 people gathered in Fleurance, a small town in the Gers department, for a funeral procession to honor 11-year-old student Lyhanna. The student had gone missing on May 29, 2026, and was found dead on June 4, 2026, in an abandoned agricultural silo near Puycasquier, about 15 kilometers south of Fleurance. The autopsy confirmed the student’s identity, while the exact causes of death are still under investigation.
Lyhanna’s parents initiated the memorial event and were personally present. They thanked the mayor of Fleurance for his support and invited the mayors of neighboring communities to join the event. However, in an official statement, they emphasized that no further political presence was desired.
The main suspect, 41-year-old Jérôme Barella, was interrogated by investigators following his arrest and denied the charges against him. During his appearance before the investigating judge at the Paris public prosecutor’s office, he refused to make a statement. The student had disappeared after leaving Collège Hubert-Reeves in Fleurance on May 29 and was found in a silo near Fleurance on June 4.
The case has also raised numerous questions regarding the handling of previous reports against the suspect. Several relatives of the victim and residents of Fleurance have criticized possible failures in processing certain complaints and warnings over recent years.
At the memorial event, participants called for more resources to protect minors and better coordination between the judiciary, law enforcement, and social services to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
The criticism extended beyond the local level and reached the highest state authorities. In light of the shortcomings revealed in the case, French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin apologized on Friday evening in the TF1 news program on behalf of the judiciary to Lyhanna’s family. President Emmanuel Macron also condemned the deficiencies, stating that “it is clear there was misconduct… and that is unacceptable.”
The memorial event in Fleurance was marked by deep sorrow and solidarity. The town’s residents and Lyhanna’s family received broad community support, uniting to remember the deceased student and to highlight the need for reforms in the handling of such tragic incidents.
